1962/3 was quite a winter. Not as extreme as 1946-7, but that was before I was born. I'm quite confused about it because my dad said that when we moved into 107 Star Street, Ware, it was months before we even knew we had a coal bunker, The garden was covered in thick snow. However, we must have moved to Ware before 1963 because I went to Christ Church school in Ware for at least a couple of years and took my 11-Plus there. That would suggest we moved no later than 1960/ 61. I remember the barges sounding their horns on the Thames at midnight on December 31, 1959-January 1, 1960, so we were living at 27 St Paul's Way, Bow, then. Another memory I have of that cold winter is the fact that I got a track suit for Christmas and was quite proud of the fact that it was warm enough for me to go down to the shops and bring back a bag of coal (probably 10kg). |
