A Comedy of Errors | Click for next image
I can't remember who JJ was, though I probably found out when I joined the staff of the Welwyn Times a couple of years later, but this review rankled. As a professional journalist I guess I should be grateful for the fact that we were reviewed at all. The play wasn't really worth reviewing, though looking at the picture I am impressed by the quality of the scenery and the costumes. So any kind of a review is good news? Perhaps. It rankled that the reviewer thought there was an ad lib, when this was just the next line. It rankled that the performance was described as top speed because one of several errors in the programme (my surname was printed as Brand) was the incorrect rendering of the finish time. It was a comedy, after all, not a bloody tragedy (technical term there). No doubt we were a bit shouty but it was a big hall. Unfortunately, A Comedy of Errors was one of Shakespeare's earliest plays and in any case the jokes in his comedies (if there are any) don't seem to work any more. I have seen the play done well by professionals but it's never going to be one of my favourites.
