Fig brings a touch of Eden to Sam's garden
A WGC man is doing his bit to make the town a little more like the Garden of Eden by growing a fig tree in his back garden.
Mr Sam Kingston of Rowans, WGC, has grown an 18 inch fig tree, but his dream of picking grapes from his own miniature vineyard is still distant. He said: "I have always wanted a fig tree and a grape vine. "If more people grew these plants it would add the finishing touches to the Garden City and make it more like the Garden of Eden. "The soil is ideal for these plants. In Hatfield Park you can find the remains of an old vineyard." Nevertheless a fig tree requires quite a bit of tending in England, a country whose weather is rarely, if ever, similar to the Mediterranean. "I don't really know how to grow the tree but I try to provide damp conditions and stoney ground," he added. He took a cutting from a tree in his brother-in-law's garden in London only a year ago. The London tree is producing fruit and he hopes that his will do the same one day. Welwyn Times
