Protest at 62.2 % rates rise attracts 6,000

More than 6,000 people gathered outside Waltham Forest Town Hall last night to protest at the 62.2 per cent increase in rates imposed by the Labour-dominated borough council. The council claimed the increase was needed to improve schools and housing and to upgrade the standard of services. Equal opportunities would be catered for by extra funding for the race relations and women's unit, and more ethnic welfare and recreation officers were to be supplied to schools. The demonstration was called by the Waltham Forest Ratepayers Action Group after an appeal to the borough's 60,000 ratepayers. A similar event attracted 5,000 people on April 9.
