harassment index See 62 per cent rate rise

For some reason the councillors who opposed the 62% rate increase in the Labour Group were subject to a harassment campaign. This campaign included filling out newspaper coupons and sending for items in our names, like this heavy piece of iron work. All of us had hundreds of letters of this character. Neil Gerrard, not a rebel but also targetted, got sent a legal book which he said told him you did not have to pay for unsolicited items sent in the post. Well, I guess you had to laugh.

For a while the council was supportive and helped by sending the stuff back. But this did not last. By September council officers told us we were on our own.
