Ivan Wilding won a heavy weight boxing title and then spent 18 months in a sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis. With nothing to do but lie in bed all day, he discovered he had a talent for drawing, winning second prize in a national art contest. This stood him in good stead in later life when he was out of work and turned to drawing to earn a living. He never spent a day in an art college or read about drawing but he was an amazing artist.
