In 2012 we've had weather forecasters put a positive spin on the weather in London as a result of the Olympics (don't believe the sunny tomorrow or manyana, it's actually dismal and set to stay that way). This is not Orwell's Doublespeak, but it does foster distrust and seething discontent. Speak the truth and shame the Devil, is a very practical strategy. Spin may work in the short term but in the longer term it undermines authority. And those who argue we are all dead in the longer term should remember that was first said a very long time ago and we are still here! |
