Fred Hamerton was a sub at the Waltham Forest Guardian. If I had a mentor, it was him. He was a curious fellow, much criticised for his mumbling manner, but there was at least one story involving Rex Pardoe in which Fred emerged as the hero.
This is from Douglas Kennedy, clearly a response to my post that Fred had died: So sorry to hear that news. I remember Fred with great affection. He taught me how unimportant journalism was. I was out doing a last minute story and rang in with a story. He said can't you bring it in. I said no. He said oh all right I 'll go and get a pencil and write down your pars. Oh the passing of time. Let us sit upon the ground and tell sad stories on the death of kings. |
