Apparently there's a huge pension fund gap at what remains of the coal industry and it may require nationalisation to sort the problem out.
When I worked in the coal industry the joke was that it was impossible for senior managers to continue working much beyond the age of 55 because it would cost them money. The pension fund was so rich (as a result of an enormous slimming down of the industry prior to the arrival of the Thatcher Government) that putting off claiming a pension actually cost money for some coal industry employees. The fact that it is now bankrupt says everything you need to know about the casino economy we now live in. |
