Thomas Waghorn, who gave his name to the nearby Wetherspoons, though after this photo was taken (and also after he had stopped using it). The pub used to be a rather impressive Post Office and now it is a shrine to the memory of Waghorn, a pioneer of the postal service (or that's what they say).
Local youths like to scale the statue (not something I would like to try) and decorate Waghorn, usually with a traffic cone as a hat. This particular embellishment was larger than usual. | Click for next image. | ||
