I remember 1960. When it arrived all the boats and barges on the Thames, and there were many then, sounded their horns to usher in the new year. In 2015 we have the sound of fireworks, or at least we do in Chatham, Medway. In 1960 we had social democracy, virtually no unemployment and a welfare state that had ambitions to provide support from the forceps to the stone. Today we have a Government intent on driving us back to the stone age, mass unemployment and the privatisation of everything from water, air, basic government services including utilities like electricity and gas. The rich are now so wealthy that they have lost the ability to spend their wealth, they simply can't buy things as fast as they become richer. The poor are vilified for their poverty.
