Empty sporting promises

Very dull Today programme on Radio 4 this morning dominated by a silly sporting contest.

Apparently, even the French are not inspired by this event (according to the Radio 4 journalists). And, of course, this is what we found when the Olympics were held in London with predictions of gridlock, lots of extra transport services and even bin collections moved to midnight to dawn; yet in reality the streets were empty as Londoners fled to get away from the 'games'.

It was only after intense, non stop media coverage that interest was aroused in the Olympics and no doubt that's what will happen with this 'event'.

Isn't it time the media companies learned that they are creating this Frankenstein's monster, which they then have to pay for when the businesses that manage sport extract mega sums from them for rights.
