I used to live in Lea Bridge Road, one of London's major highways. The flat was old and the single glazed windows shook with the rumble of the traffic. Where I now live in Chatham the silence is profound. It's not the cold windy silence of Dartmoor but a kind of warm, muggy quiet, a bit like air pressurisation on a jet as the ears, desperately searching for some sound, find a hum; a comfortable tinnitus. |
