On the bus we talked of the cruelty and insanity of Roman emperors and a little boy ventured the opinion that Nero was the worst, something people often say.
One joker chipped in that at least he was a good violin player and, of course, he was said to have fiddled while Rome burned. But the violin (or its precursor) wasn't invented until the 1540s so what did Nero fiddle on? In any case I like to think Claudius was the most vile emperor since he invaded Britain simply to issue a press release. Of course, we would probably never have heard of Boudicca if it hadn't been for Claudius but i'm sure she would have traded eternal fame for not having her daughters gang raped by a Legion. |
