Banned cinema
Many years ago (probably in the 1960s) I went to the St Albans film society to see a banned film, Closely Observed Trains. Boy did I feel grown up. But I never got to see the other banned film they were talking about at the time: The Trans Europ Express. Until tonight. Like Closely Observed Trains, the Trans Europ Express is a surprisingly clever film, brilliantly made, gripping and stylish. There is a certain amount of sex in it and even bondage, but even if you were of a disposition to be offended, you could hardly compare it to the banal (and therefore so much more objectionable) reality shows on Channel 5. What happened to that clever, intelligent cinema? |
