Highest high since 1957. Years ago I was booking into a hotel on the Shannon when I noticed the barometer was off the scale at the other end. I wondered if it was broken. They said probably. But it was not. The rain stung the face like being hit by darts and the hotel had no power for two days. Fortunately they had a solid fuel cooker.
