I've been learning French the Duolingo way for more than a year now. According, to this screen it's 446 days of straight lessons (two learning segments a day), but I wouldn't trust Duolingo since like the Government, Microsoft tells you what they want you to hear rather than the truth.
It's often fun, sometimes a challenge and gives me a feeling of having accomplished something, though I'm not quite sure what. Clearly my French has improved a lot but I still can't sit down and watch a film in French without subtitles. Learning has its own rewards: it keeps the brain nimble and gives some structure to my day. Speaking French, however, is not one of the rewards: so far, anyway. | See also this link. | Posted by Jonathan Brind. |
