The ONS death stats
The following table is taken from a freedom of information request to the ONS.

You will see that there were more deaths in 2020 than any other in the three decades, but this is partly because the population size is larger. If you look at the crude mortality rate (deaths per thousand) you will see that the death rate in 2020 is about average for this 30 year period. The key figure is the 2019 death rate, probably reflecting lower than average seasonal flu deaths. This may have meant that there were more elderly and vulnerable people for the virus to kill. 2020 was not a good year, but it doesn't look like a pandemic. https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/transparencyandgovernance/freedomofinformationfoi/deathsintheukfrom1990to2020
