I have come across an album put together by a senior officer of one of the Desert Rat regiments (or part of the Eighth Army, anyway) the Royal Sussex Regiment. I don't own it but I can copy it. The main point of it is not the photos but extensive reports produced for the Cabinet Office Historical Section about El Alamein. Who knew the Cabinet Office had a historical section? These reports are not exactly flattering for Monty, traducing his reputation for planning the battle meticulously. I thought of making a Ken Burns style video about El Alamein and have watched some of a documentary about the battle produced at the time by the Army Film Unit (interesting largely for the clear influence of the German film maker Leni Riefenstahl) and read up about the battle, and find myself confused and bored in equal measure. I am never going to understand this stuff. So no video but here are some of the pictures. You may be interested in them. |
