EU commissioner wants to legislate to block Israeli spyware |
Didier Reynders has condemned alleged attempts by Hungarian national security services to illegally access information on political opponents of the Hungarian government, through their phones, by using Israeli Pegasus spyware. He's calling on the EU to swiftly legislate to further protect the rights of activists, journalists and politicians.
A number of Catalonian MEPs claimed that current and former leaders of Catalonia's pro-independence government have also been targeted by the Spanish government. Interestingly, Dutch MEP, Sophie In ‘t Veld, announced that the Dutch parliament's civil liberties, justice and home committee, will be launching its own investigation into the use of Pegasus software within the EU, raising concerns that the European commission could itself have had some dealing with the spyware company. In ‘t Veld called for "a proper European intel service, subject to full democratic scrutiny of the European parliament exclaiming that "Europe is not the wild west.
