Tell Sid to get his hands off our gas
I met Sir Denis Rooke, who was Chairman of British Gas before Thatcher privatised it. Even his own mother wouldn't have called him lovable. But there is no doubt that if he, or more likely his successor, was still running British Gas the current crisis and the destruction of much of British industry would not be happening. By telling Sid (see video if you are too young to remember this slogan) to buy shares in the nationalised company, Thatcher was selling the family silver and thus mortgaging the future. That future is now but Thatcher is long gone and can no longer be held to account.
