I am not too bothered about rats. I understand they can be a vector for diseases, but my personal experience of them is that they are intelligent and friendly, certainly when they are young.

So I am puzzled by the fact that someone, or more likely some animal, appears to be leaving me presents of dead rats; always placed in the same position.

A while back when this used to happen I imagined it was a cat I used to feed. But I don't feed the cats any more.

A more likely gift giver is the vixen who lives in my garden. She probably has cubs to feed.

I used to put fat balls out for the birds until I noticed that the birds weren't visiting any more and the fat balls disappeared over night. So I guessed the fox was eating them and stopped supplying them.

Then the rats started to appear. I wonder if the fox is trying to trade for the return of those fat balls?
