Who rules Britain? It is becoming increasingly clear that we are heading for an autumn election on the theme: who rules Britain? This time the choice offered will not be the NUM or the Tories (the way Ted Heath attempted to frame the electoral choices in 1974) but the British Government or the EU. Once again de Pfeffel is lining up the poor benighted Eurocrats as the villains of the piece. The last time we had a who rules Britain election, it wasn't the NUM that wanted to break the power of the Government; but the Government who wanted to break the NUM then led by the distinctly moderate Joe Gormley. Today the villains are not the miners but the EU. And once again it is not the EU that wants to destroy the British Government, but the British Government that wants to use the EU as a scapegoat. In 1974, the electorate responded to Ted Heath with what sounded like a single voice 'not you mate'. This time I expect a similar result and we can look forward to seeing Starmer standing on the doorstep of number 10, not drowning but waving, before the end of the year. For Starmer haters, and considering how colourless (virtually invisible) Starmer is, this is a surprisingly large group, he will only get there heading a rankerous and poisonous coalition (and that's just Labour). The other parties to his coalition will be even more sullen and potentially rebellious. Considering that all projections suggest the economy is going to have its worst non-Covid period, either flat lining or actually moving into a full scale slump, you wouldn't wish anyone other than your worst enemy to be PM. Will they be happy? Probably not. The only happy man in Britain will be de Pfeffel who will be freed from the tiresome necessity of paying the minimum amount of attention he currently devotes to being PM and will instead be able to spend his time on lucrative book and speaking tours. This will be his finest hour... | INDEX Posted by Jonathan Brind. | Tuesday June 14, 2022 |
