MI5's weird world Absurd stories have been planted by MI5 in several newspapers suggesting that Russia has ordered sleeper agents to be ready to leap into action at a moment's notice as a result of the Ukraine war. There are a number of absurdities to these. First they connect the agents with cyber attacks but it makes no sense to embed hackers in the country you are targetting since the internet is global. You might as well base them in offices in Moscow or wherever. Second, there's little point in having a sleeper who is not prepared to leap into action pretty quickly. So the idea of warning them to get ready when they should be ready all the time, is pretty lame. But the main point (and here I quote from one of the stories) is: "Sources claim Putin has spies in all areas of British society, from top public schools to staff in the civil service and the House of Commons." What kind of world do you have to live in to believe that public schools, the civil service and the House of Commons are "all areas of British society". If you needed an explanation for why MI5 is so bad at catching spies, it would be hard to find a better one than that stupidity. | INDEX Posted by Jonathan Brind. | June 19, 2022 |
