INDEX September 1, 2022
It would be a cheap crack to observe that it is surprising that an organisation that breaks the law with impunity (according to several books written by insiders and whistleblowers) needs a legal team.

But of course even the Mafia has legal advisers.

What is probably more interesting about this advert is the relatively modest salary (£108k) for such a high powered sounding job; more like the earnings of a country solicitor than a high powered London team leading lawyer. But MI5 insiders are always going on about how bad their salaries are, observing that they have to accept rotten pay for the honour of being able to defend their country. Well, maybe.

But the main point about the advert is the definitive sounding description of the work carried out by MI5.

MI5 safeguards the UK against threats such as terrorism, espionage, cyber and sabotage. We investigate suspect individuals and organisations in the UK to obtain, collate, analyse and assess secret intelligence relating to these threats.

So that's what they do! I wonder how much of that activity is actually legal?
