Battle in the sky | ||
Usually the dawn chorus consists of cocks crowing on the allotment close to my home. Not this morning. There were about 50 Jackdaws circling quite menacingly just above house height. Something had upset them. As I walked down the service road next to my house it became obvious what that something was. A bird of prey, a kestrel or a falcon, perhaps, was drowning something in a puddle. You can guess what it was. As I approached it tried to fly away but bird of prey's prize was too heavy. It couldn't get airborne. So it flew away only to return a little later and drag its meal into a secluded place. My path. The menacing Jackdaws had gone by then. Clearly they had figured out that it was too late. |
