I moved to Egremont Street partly because the houses are made of slate which is quite a difficult material to bug using the techniques employed by MI5, and I have just discovered that a guy called Egremont made probably the most intelligent observation about intelligence (the spooks) ever. All intelligence agencies, he said, were a waste of time and money. "Much better if the Russians saw the Cabinet minutes twice a week. Prevent all that dangerous guesswork." Lord Egremont was the secretary of former PM Harold Macmillan.
