I was wrong, again For much of this year I have been predicting an autumn election but I was wrong. And, of course, when you are wrong the thing to do is to blame reality rather than yourself. There should have been an autumn election. Truss should have taken the reigns of power and done a few populist and cosmetic things. She could then have gone to the party conference and expected a rapturous coronation. This would then have been followed by an election in November, which she would probably have lost, but the Conservatives would still have been the largest party in Parliament. Now the Tories are in panic mode and genuinely believe they could be wiped out at the next election. They might even get less seats than the Liberals, or more likely the Greens. If you fear disaster you hold off going to the public until the last possible moment. That means a January 2025 election. In the mean time we are in for a Tory party that will descend into a blood bath and an economy that is likely to go into free fall next year. There will be growing poverty with increasing displays of flamboyant wealth. As the wicked witch of the west said: what a world, what a world. INDEX |
