The pettyness of 'intelligence' If you read the newspapers or listen to the radio right now, you will discover that the spooks, the so called 'intelligence' services are making a pitch to take on the Chinese. This is because they realise that they will be out of a job unless they find a new villain. There are precious few spies left (you can learn almost anything covertly or usually even overtly via the internet), terrorism seems to be past its peak (and lets face it our 'intelligence' services are not well equipped to deal with working class fascists or fanatical muslims, unless the villains happen to have gone to public school! ). As for organised crime, the police are better equipped, trained and organised. So why the Chinese? Well, in the past the cry used to be the Russians are coming. Now it's the Chinese are coming and the great thing about this fear stoking is that the fearmongers can't lose. If the Chinese really do start to make life intolerable, they can say we told you so. If the fear never turns into reality they can say we protected you. But in reality the 'intelligence' services spend their time and money harassing innocent people like me. Tonight my BBC Iplayer has mostly been rendered unusable, despite the fact that my laptop has consistently been saying I have a strong signal. I thought I will be sneaky. I'll wait a bit and then download what I want to watch so I can watch it tomorrow. This worked for a while and I managed to download a few things, but then strangely the old problems recurred. Clearly you are not going to believe that this is what the spooks do. But it is. Don't argue with me, argue with Sir John Sawers, former head of MI6. This is what he says they do:
Sir John Sawers, Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), from November 2009 until November 2014, on Radio 4's Today Programme (April 19, 2021) reveals that they disrupt and harass anyone they feel like picking on, without using any judicial process.
