INDEX November 7 2022
Today would be my mother's birthday. I remember that date better than any other because she used to drum it into me, though I am generally hopeless at dates (ask any of the vanishingly small number of women I have been out with in recent years).

In many ways she was quite a remarkable woman. My dad (who had a very interesting career) said she would have been much more successful than him if she had been allowed to continue working after they got married.

The tradition at the time was that women gave up their jobs more or less as part of the marriage ceremony. Instead she devoted herself to family and small children: having five of her own and then working voluntarily as a teaching assistant.

She had a tremendous command of the English language, passing on her middle class accent to me (and for ever denying me the pretension of being working class despite my relatively humble background).

Merlyn (Williams) Brind and me.
