MI6's leading role in the failed plot to kill Hitler!
Over the last few days a number of media outlets have been reporting that Churchill has been dragged into the Valkyrie plot, the failed attempt by senior German officers to kill Hitler. See for example Wales Online. This, of course, is a very old story, as stories tend to be when they are about the records of our 'intelligence' services (not long ago it was said Lenin's personal file was still secret, has it been published?). But the issue here is not that Churchill has been dragged in but that MI5 was providing the documentation for yet another MI6 cock up. Apparently MI6 had an inside man who managed to escape whilst most of his co conspirators were killed. After the second world war MI6 was said to be a great success and was taken as a model by the Americans, who were unaware of the true loyalties of spies like Kim Philby and the other Apostles. In truth MI6 did notch up some successes but they were better at marking their own homework and telling their own story, than they were at spying.
