Whilst our children, egged on by the Met Office, risk career destroying jail sentences by sticking their flesh to motorways, the environmental lobby is having a laugh by appointing the chief executive of one of the world's biggest oil companies as president of the next COP.
This jamboree, to be held in Dubai, is the 28th in a series of conferences that have achieved absolutely nothing (as the attached graph reveals). CO2 is being added to the atmosphere at a more or less constant rate, though with a slight increase in recent years. The whole purpose of COP is to reduce emissions of CO2 not increase them. This graph is based on data from the standard CO2 monitoring stations. For those interested the oil sheikh (he's actually a Sultan) Ahmed Al Jaber is head of a renewables firm as well as being chief executive of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. COP stands for Conference of the Parties and the junketing was initiated by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). Its job was to scare the world into cutting carbon emissions. The current rapid increase in CO2 emissions is even beginning to worry the global warming wonks, since it doesn't make sense to them. Industry has been producing less and so polluting less and there's less traffic thanks to lockdowns and Covid. CO2 emissions should be going down. What they have discovered is what we have been trying to tell them for more than three decades. Human CO2 emissions are relatively small and so natural emission variability can swamp anything people do. |
