The Opening Address at The Steamboat Institute Energy and Climate Summit, The Nexus of U.S. Energy Policy, Climate Science, Freedom and Prosperity by Steven E. Koonin, Ph.D. on March 12, 2022 at the Steamboat Grand in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Steven E Koonin PH.D. is the author of Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What it Doesn't and Why it Matters. Former Undersecretary for Science, U.S. Department of Energy under the Obama Administration. Koonin's basic approach is to actually read the papers and point out that the press releases and executive summaries are not bourne out by the actual reports they are supposed to be describing. Although he keeps saying he has been pilloried as a denier in truth he is more a wait and see man. His argument is that there's no emergency now and we should wait and see what actually happens since most of projections are not really that bad. I find this quite irritating since I had the same view in the 1980s and 1990s (wait and see) but it seems to me we have already done a lot of waiting and seeing. That said he provides a lot of interesting information, for example a record of Nile minmums going back nearly 1,500 years. |
