Click for next image | Millom & District Local History Society· conducted a geophys survey of one of the fields close to the old church, Holy Trinity, Millom. This ancient parish church dates back to the Normans, originally serving the scattered farms in the area. I'd say the site was used for religious purposes earlier than Norman times given the row of Yews on the cemetery side of the church. Yews are believed to be ancient trees, dating back to the old religion. These ones seem to have been hollowed out and new growth has occurred around the edges, making them difficult to date. Even so they were clearly planted at reasonably even spaces in a line (so cultivated) and may have been replaced from time to time. | |
