But this was not like any slate I had ever seen being smooth and clearly very high quality. Most of the rest of the rocks had absurd names, presumably given to them to make the science of geology something only experts can access. They had nothing to do with the common or garden minerals I know about. The quarry itself is mind boggling, utterly vast. I could only photograph tiny slivers of it, since the cavernous edge was very sensibly fenced off by barbed wire and there were trees between the edge and the fence. The signage was also mind boggling informing us that the Lake District is actually a caldera rather like Yellowstone, though seemingly not as geologically active since we don't have hot springs here.
