The black and white image is the writer Norman Nicholson. He is almost certainly Millom's finest son and we were celebrating some kind of anniversary for him a few days ago.

In Medway there would have been a fancy dress parade and much beer drinking, but in Millom we do things differently. For one thing we don't have the pubs.

Anyway, I hope you will agree that the most outstanding feature of his face is/ are the rather splendid sideburns. I would call them mill owner sideburns.

The extraordinary thing is that I have started to develop quite pronounced sideburns myself since I moved to Millom. I'm certainly not a mill owner and have no intention of following in the footsteps of the great man. For one thing he lived in this small town all his life whereas I am an incomer.

And I have had beards on and off (more often off than on) for donkey's years; but they used to make me look like some kind of matelot. This sideburns thing is a new and rather worrying development.

I wonder if it is something in the air. Does the shadow of black Combe (a local mountain/ hill Nicholson wrote about) encourage the sprouting of facial hair?
