Sir Bob's your uncle, or maybe not | ||
Professor Sir Bob Watson predicts the target to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C will be missed. My feeling is that any target the climatologists come up with is certainly less significant than the observation that if it rains on St Swithun's Day (which it did) then it will rain every day for 40 days (it has so far).
According to the Department for Energy Security UK CO2 emissions have been dropping remorselessly, heading securely towards net zero emissions. Yet in the real world CO2 emissions have been rising steadily with no sign at all that there has been any attempt to reduce them. When you tell people this they blame governments, notably the Chinese who have been building a remarkable number of coal fired power stations. But the Chinese are also the world's leading producers of solar panels. Years ago when nuclear annihilation was the thing that we were supposed to be terrified about, the UK government produced a film designed to tell people what they should do. This was viciously parodied by a film called "Tie Up Your Ballcock", the idea being that your entire environment might have been flattened but so long as you took care of your lavatory chain you would be ok. I think this might be our tie up your ballcock moment, with ludicrous schemes abounding; none of which can do anything other than make their sellers prosperous. The latest temperature set available on the Earth CO2 website reveals that May was the third hottest since 1880, 1.22 degrees hotter than the 1880-1920 baseline average. In my view that's cooling not warming. Warming is when it keeps getting hotter. The third hottest is cooler, or at least cooler than those Mays that were, er, hotter. And while climate records resolutely fail to tumble, atmospheric CO2 levels keep notching up new records non-stop. People who don't want to be bothered with fiddly details dismiss all this and argue that it is just climate change denial. After all, don't the governments know best? Yet when it comes to explaining the remorseless, non-stop increase in atmospheric CO2 they blame... the governments. Funny old world! As little time ago as 2013 the Guardian ran a story saying a new climate model predicted that Earth would warm 4ºC by 2100. In November 2018 Reuters reported that Global temperatures were on course to rise by 3-5ºC this century. You can find the Mauna Loa data at https://www.co2.earth/ Guardian article from December 2013: Planet will warm 4C by 2100 |
