It is not sensible to look at a single set of climate figures and make a statement about what's happening to the planet's weather.
All the same two things are pretty clear: (a) despite the rash of extreme weather stories trawled up by the media, global temperatures are increasing very slowly and this 1.5C degree doomsday figure is not likely to be reached anytime soon. Once again the latest stats reveal that the monthly temperature was the third highest. In other words, it is cooler than it has been. (b) Atmospheric carbon dioxide is increasing at a faster rate despite 27 annual Conferences of the Parties (or COPs) initiated by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).The purpose of the COPs was supposed to be to reduce CO2 emissions and it was felt to be so important just a few months ago that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had to hurriedly reverse a decision not to attend. Meanwhile in the real world (the one we live in) it's getting greener and crop growth is getting faster The greening phenomenon was first detected using satellite data in the mid-1990s by Ranga Myneni of Boston University and colleagues. This has been updated to 2017 by NASA's MODIS satellite. "Over the last two decades, the Earth has seen an increase in foliage around the planet, measured in average leaf area per year on plants and trees," says NASA in a report dated March 7, 2019. MODIS stands for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. |
