Harassment by a bailiffs | ||
Almost exactly a year ago I moved from Medway (Kent) to my present address in Millom, Cumberland. I took great care to make sure I settled all my accounts (debts) before I went. One that was more difficult than most was to the gas and electricity utility company British Gas. This was because you could only tell them you were moving a limited amount of time prior to the actual move , and there were a lot of things going on at the time. Nevertheless I waited until I was allowed to tell them, read my meters on the day of the move, sent the read outs to them (by text I think) and got an email from them thanking me for my final payment. Since then I have had a series of demands from them seeking various sums of money, for example £585 in June. They never give an email or surface mail address so the only way you can reply is by use of the phone. I do not accept the right of the company to send me letters and emails but not to allow me to reply by the same means. A few months ago I got a call from a meter reading agency called Morrisons, seeking to make an appointment to read my meter at 15 Grove Road, Chatham, my old address. I explained that I had moved from there months earlier, and asked the caller to pass this information on to British Gas. More recently I got a letter from a debt collection agency . I wrote back enclosing copies of the emails British Gas had sent me thanking me for telling the company I was moving and for making my final payment. I thought the cherry on the top would be a copy of a letter from the Land Registry stating that the ownership of the property had transferred in August 2022. I have now received a second letter from the debt collection agency asking for "evidence that you sold the property before the supply period". I regard this as harassment. Can anyone advise what action I can take? |
