My posts to social media, usually Facebook since I haven't got the hang of X (or Twitter), are systematically sidelined or minimised probably by one of the Fb algorithms, possibly by human intervention. As an example I just posted about the film The Truman Show. My friends include several people involved in broadcasting and some film buffs. There was a time when a post like that would have produced at least some response. All I got was a defeaning silence. This is probably because I took the opportunity to talk about how today there are so many cameras trained on everyone that Truman would not get much more privacy when he escaped his captivity than he got when he was the star of his own live tv show. I also commented on the way data was being collected (for example by supermarkets). Of course, I didn't really expect this post to get a viewing. I am wearily familiar of being sidelined. In fact I wouldn't mention it except that in America the FBI, the equivalent in many ways to MI5 in Britain, is coming under fire for social media censorship. Reclaim The Net (and the New York Times) reported that Congressman Jim Jordan, acting as the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, has formally summoned FBI agent Elvis Chan demanding he come forth and share information about the FBI's active involvement in online censorship. Reclaim the Net says there is a potentially significant case regarding this form of censorship due to arrive at the Supreme Court. |
