I discovered this Wollemi Pine at the Sydney Botanic Gardens. It's a rare, in fact virtually unique, survivor from prehistoric times.
To be honest, I wasn't the first to discover it. It was found not too long ago in the Blue Mountains, just outside Sydney. Today you can buy one from the Botanic Garden's shop, yet it is still said to be endangered. The Sydney Botanic Gardens is certainly worth a visit. Unlike its UK cousin, Kew, where they expect to extract an arm and a leg from visitors, Sydney is free. It's a fine park and you can certainly spend an interesting day there but to be honest it is neither as big nor as comprehensive as Kew. Of course, there are other botanic gardens in Australia (as indeed there are in the UK). |
