Spooks to vet academics
So MI5 plans to vet academics prior to appointment at British universities. Well I suppose it will give the spooks something to do. The boys from the bizarre stuff have been going on about the threat from China for some while now, despite a complete failure to take any meaningful action (like actually arrest anyone). It got to the point where a comedy programme on Radio 4 (Loose Ends) actually made a joke about the tiny action actually taken. Yes the Chinese do try to use the universities to gain information about cutting edge scientific developments but these days the traffic is not all one way. In some fields the Chinese are well ahead when it comes to patents issued. In America 150 alleged or suspected Chinese agents have been arrested or prosecuted recently. In Britain the figure is none at all. | |
