Waspish thinking
Walking beside the Duddon with a ferocious breeze (not quite a gale but enough to fly a kite) and a westering sun it feels like a fine autumn afternoon. And yet the revisionist weather forecasts tell us summer is coming back soon.

That can’t be since all we have had is a few isolated sunny days, not enough to constitute a summer even if they were all gathered together. Summer never started.

At least there are now insects: butterflies, some bees and loads of brilliant blue matchstick sized flying things. Strangely there are no wasps, though you would think an early autumn would be heaven for them.

This came to mind when I took my usual table at the beach cafe in Haverigg. The previous occupants had left a huge dollop of jam in the middle of the table. Yet there were no wasps? Is this the beginning of a science fiction story?
