National Grid tunnel

(10/Nov/2012)

National Grid created a tunnel 60 metres under Lea Marshes in summer 2014. It carries high voltage electricity cables connecting the Hackney Substation headhouse (the one close to South Millfields park) with one called Eade Road Shaft and Headhouse (near the Seven Sisters Road). National Grid said activity at surface level would be minimal since the tunnel was to be bored rather than open cut and then filled. From November 19 until December 14 (2012) test boreholes were tunnelled in order to study ground conditions. These pictures show the removal of the tunnel boring equipment on completion of the job in July 2014. Could this be the beginning of the end for the iconic pylons?
