There are three sub-species of Common Vetch (Vicia sativa). The 1970s survey (See flora of the marsh) identified Vicia sativa ssp. sativa which is an agriculturally improved variety. Without visible fruit it is hard to tell which sub-species is shown in these pictures. Click link to see close up of flower
Many of the vetches have been used in agriculture because their roots form a symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which improves the fertility of the land.
