As part of a translocation programme to protect the species from extinction, Adders Vipera berus were released at a site in the Lea Valley near Leyton. They have since been recorded on the N-S tarmac path between Leyton Marsh and the Lee Valley Park Riding Centre. The Adder is a Red Data Book species.

Inside the waterworks (Coppermill Lane) there's also a sign warning workers to beware of vipers in the long grass.
