Caroline Gulliver, at Espirito Santo, estimated that like-for-like store sales fell 1.3pc for Next during the period.

She said: "As expected, this was a 'quarter of two halves', with brand sales in August down circa 3pc due to the Olympic distraction, but September and October brand sales up around 6pc to 7pc, we estimate.
