By a long series of coincidences a near-complete set of the wood engravings, made in the 1880s for The Three Jovial Huntsmen came to the Press.

The story behind the book is an interesting one: it is the only one of Randolph Caldecott's picture books that was not a traditional text.

It was written in part by Caldecott himself, who for some strange reason did not acknowledge the true author of most of the poem; and it was the only one of the Picture Books in which some of the wood engravings were made outside Edmund Evans's workshops.
