The will of William Brynde, 1574/5 [PROB 11/57] Margin Tm {Testamentum] W{illia}m Brynde In dei Nomine [In the Name of God] Amen the eleventh day of January Anno Dm 1574 [/75] Anno regni Regine Dni Elizabeth XVII {17} I William Brynde of Southmarston within the parish of Highworth in the county of Wiltshire and in the diocese of Sarum yeoman although sick of body being of good and perfect memory and remembrance laud and praise be given unto Almighty God do make this my present testament and last will in manner & form following revoking all other my former wills and testaments whatsoever heretofore were by me made first and chiefly of all before all other things I commend and bequeath my soul to the merciful hands of Almighty God my redeemer and Saviour and my body to be buried within the church of Southmarston aforesaid Item I give and bequeath to the Cathedral church of Sarum VId (6d) Item I give to the church of Southmarston aforesaid XIIIs {13s} Item I give to the poor people of Southmarston aforesaid Vs {5s} Item I give to the poor people of Highworth aforesaid Eastrop and Westrop Xs {10s} Item I give to the poor people of Saint Margaret Stratton VIs VIIId {6s 8d} Item I give to every of my godchildren XIId Item I give and bequeath unto the right worshipful Sir John Hungerforde Knight my master my best horse Item I give unto Jone Hamonde one of my sister's daughters one cow and on heckfor (heifer?) of the age of II (2) years old six sheep And also five pounds of current English money Orels {or else} the value of the said sum of five pounds Item I give and bequeath unto Jone Brynde my daughter and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten forever all that my tenement and lands with all & singular the appurtenances to the same in any wise appertaining or belongings set lying and being in Maredge within the parish of Ramesbury in the said county of Wiltshire late in the tenure and occupation of one freeman and now in the tenure and occupation of John Hall or his assignees and also all that my walk of pasture for one hundred sheep lying and being in the town and field of Chipping Lamborne in the county of Berkshire with all my arable lands meadows pastures commons and feeding with all and singular the appurtenances lying and being in the town and fields of Chipping Lamborne aforesaid But if it shall fortune that my daughter Jone shall depart this present world without such lawful issue as is aforesaid Then I will that my said land in either of the said places above specified shall descend and come unto my said land in either of the said place above specified shall descend and come unto my daughter Elizabeth Brinde the sister of the said Joane Brinde and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten as is aforesaid forever And for default of such issue then I will that the said lands shall remain and come unto John Brinde my cousin and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever And for default of such issue to be had as aforesaid Then I will that the said lands above specified shall remain and come unto Henry Brinde my cousin and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever Item I give and bequeath unto Richard Spencer my son in law and Jone his wife one hundred of wether* sheep A feather bed with all the apparel thereto belonging and my best brass pot to be delivered by the discretion of my overseers within one month next after my decease Item I will and bequeath unto the said Elizabeth Brinde my daughter my lease of VI (6) yard lands and a half lying and being in Overstratton in the said county of Wiltshire and six score and ten sheep eight oxen six kine* eight other young rudder(?) beasts of two years of age and six horse beats which chattels shall be delivered unto the said Elizabeth and to her only behoof and use by my executrix at the discretion of my overseers to stufhir(?) grounds aforesaid at her first entry to her lease aforesaid that is to say immediately after my decease And also I give unto the said Elizabeth Brinde my daughter the best feather bed in the house saving one with all the apparel and furniture to the same belonging and also the best bedstead saving one with two pairs of canvass sheets and two pair of lokeram sheets besides those sheets which he shall have with her bed aforesaid And also half a garnishe of pewter vessel and one brass pot which bed and household stuff shall be delivered unto her or her assignees at their age of seventeen years until which time that during the time of her minority until that she shall come unto the age o XVII years my will is that she shall be under the tuition guiding and governance of her mother or her assignees guiding both her person and also her legacy as aforesaid unto her behoof from year to year during the time aforesaid at the discretion and reasonable Judgement of my overseers provided always that if my said daughter Elizabeth be not ruled by the lawful and reasonable governance and persuasions of her mother so that the same persuasions do not extend to any discomodity or hindrance of my said daughter Elizabeth in any respect during the time of her minority as aforesaid to have only the lease aforesaid and forty pounds of current English money and so to depart not claiming of right or interest of any thing or things more Item I give and bequeath unto Alice Morris my daughter in law XIIli VIs VIIId (£13 6s 8d} of current English money to be delivered unto her by my executrix or her assignees at the date of her marriage Item I give unto Edith Brinde my brother's daughter Vli {£5} pr current English money to be paid by the hands of my executrix or her assignees at the discretion of my overseers within one quarter of a year next after my decease Item I will that Margaret my wife shall have to her own proper use my lease of the parsonage of Hannington in the county of Wiltshire so that nevertheless if she fortune to depart this life before the years of the said lease be expired that then the said lease with the years then undetermined and not ended to descend to the said Elizabeth my daughter or to her assignees during the whole term unexpired Item I give unto Williams Harding of Grondwell forty ewes to be delivered by the hands or assignment of my executrix within one month next after my decease Item I give unto Agnes Harding the wife of the said William Harding a Mare at the discretion of my overseers Item I give unto John Pytt my servant six sheep and to Richard Iles four sheep and to every other of my hindes (hands?) and servants one sheep apiece to be delivered at the discretion of my overseers all the residues of my goods cattle and chattels movable & unmovable of what kind nature condition or property soever they be my debts being paid my legacies fulfilled and the charges of my funeral being performed I give them fully and wholly unto Margaret my wife whom I ordain and make my sole & alone Executrix of this my last will and testament And also I ordain and make James Poton' gent my son in law and my well beloved cousin William Harding, Richard Spencer my son in law and William Cusse to be overseers of this my last will and testament and I give to every of them for their pains herein to be taken IIIs IIIId (3s 4d) in witness that this is my true testament and last will I the said William Brynde have put to my sign and
