Letter dated 28/5/1910 from A W Brind

1838-1920 A W Brind

"You enquire what part of Wiltshire the Brinds came from? We are the head branch of Wanborough close to Swindon which is only some 12 miles N. of Marlborough on the N.E. Corner of Wilts and close to the border of N. Berks. We had landed property also in adjacent villages such as Stanton Fitz-Warren-- called Stanton Fitz Brind or Brynd formerly-- from the time of Edward III & his sons the Black Prince and John of Gaunt and for four centuries after. In those days our family intermarried with Earl Hardwicke (Yorke) Earl of Radnor (Pleydell Bouverie) Earl of Errol- Lord Petre and last but not least John Brind Gent of Wanborough married Jane a sister of the Duke of Buckingham & Chandos about the year 1810 I think. The Dukedom is now extinct but the title and some of the property has merged I believe into the Earldom of Buckingham & Jersey as the Gore Langtons have a Chandos in the family (whose portrait you sent to Irene!) I suppose they are connected with the old Duke's family. There are large old family tombs in Wanborough Church yard with our arms viz 3 hands on of 15th & 16th centuries as I've myself verified & an old connection of the family the late Sir Thomas Phillips Bart D.C.L. (the greatest authority on ...) gave me our pedigree. The Baskervilles & other very old families also we intermarried with."

From a photostat copy of part of a letter dated 28/5/10 from A W Brind to his daughter Dolly (i.e. Dorothy 1885-1947).

Note from David Brind, May 26, 2002: David was anxious to put on record that there are a number of serious errors in the above letter. A W Brind appears to be using the same source at Walter Lannoy Brind, see
Letter from Walter Lannoy Brind.
Addition made August 7, 2004: AWB's family are now well aware that there is no proven link between them and the Wanborough family.
Brind Docs 45 and 49. Thank you for adding the footnotes. I would still be most grateful if you would kindly remove them. I have not put them in my notes as I have tried to be 100% accurate using the latest info. (I did not notice any letters from your family on the CD). Alfred W, his son Walter L and some of Hugh's work cast doubt on our work if we repeat their mistakes, i.e. if future generations find some things very wrong on your cd they will be suspicious of all our work.
